THE FOUNDER

MI JONG LEE

Lee has been a fashion designer and manufacturer for over 40 years. Her company, Emmelle Design, encompasses two fashion brands, Emmelle and Mi Jong Lee, and now a division of manufacturing for third parties, Emmelle Manufacturing.

Lee was born in Korea and came to New York City 1980. She launched Emmelle Design in 1982 with an unwavering focus on vertical integration and soon established retail, wholesale, and ecommerce channels for her brands. She later evolved that same philosophy into Emmelle Manufacturing.

Lee believes that American ingenuity is our greatest resource and is working to revitalize New York City’s historic Garment District. In 2024, she received The David Prize for her efforts.

PANDEMIC RESPONSE & PIVOT

PPE MANUFACTURING

In 2020, Lee formed the NYC Manufacturer’s Coalition in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with three other manufacturers, Emmelle Design produced nearly 1,000,000 medical gowns.

All four companies survived and from the infrastructure they created, Emmelle Manufacturing was born. If we were able to produce PPE at volume, with accountability and transparency, why not other volume items?
